Using a combination of a primary growth retardant, mefluidide, a synergistic additive, chlorsulfuron, a detergent to enhance penetration (X-77), and a herbicide, 2,4-D, to provide for control of broadleaf weeds, full-season management of bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.)—tall fescue (Festuca arundinaceae Schreb.) mixtures along roadsides has been achieved. A single spray application is made in the spring, and no additional herbicide applications or mechanical mowing are needed. The treatment is effective with greater than 90% control of fescue seed heads. Those few seed heads that do form remain short. It is economical. The costs of materials and application are equal to or less than the cost of a single mowing cycle. The treatment is environmentally safe when applied in early spring before most agricultural crops have been planted. The effectiveness and low cost of the combination derive from laboratory and greenhouse observations that various materials, herein referred to as additives, often only weakly effective as growth retardants themselves, will interact synergistically with mefluidide to provide overall treatment effectiveness at application rates that are economical. Using this principle, a combination suitable for roadside vegetation management was devised, field-tested for 2 years under actual use conditions, and found to be effective for full-season vegetation management of mixed bluegrass—tall fescue turf to permit considerable cost savings when compared to three-cycle mechanical mowing.  相似文献

The filtrate from a suspension of the cyanobacterium Anabaena minutissima var. attenuata depressed thoracic limb beat frequency of Daphnia carinata by 38–45% in a food-free medium. Repeated exposure to the filtrate produced a similar depression of activity with full or neary full recovery. Response time to the filtrate was 5–8 min and recovery time was 8–12 min. The dose effect on limb beat frequency was continuous, linear, correlated with increased concentration and with no threshold. There was no relationship between body length and limb beat frequency.The interaction between toxicity and food concentration was tested using the diatom Cyclotella suspended in Anabaena filtrate. Daphnia limb beat frequency was depressed by 62%.  相似文献

 Plant responses to saturation vapour pressure deficit (SVPD) were studied by subjecting black spruce [Picea mariana (Mill) B.S.P.] and jack pine seedlings (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) to humid (0.3 – 0.8 kPa) or dry (2.0 – 2.5 kPa SVPD) regimes for 4 weeks using a computer-controlled environmental system to control diurnal variation in SVPD. Dry matter accumulation in needles was not altered by increasing SVPD. However, root growth declined by 60% which increased shoot to root ratio and reduced total seedling dry weight in both black spruce and jack pine. Relative growth rate of jack pine also declined to about half the rate of plants grown under humid conditions. In situ root marking studies showed that the decline in root growth of jack pine under the high SVPD was the result of reduced lateral root initiation, whereas root elongation was unaffected by humidity. A 4-week exposure to dry air increased abscisic acid (ABA) levels in needles, but not roots, of jack pine whereas ABA levels in black spruce were not altered. A short (3-day) exposure failed to increase needle ABA levels in either species. These results suggest that the responses of conifers to dry air were not the result of ABA accumulation. 1. The catecholamines dopamine, epinephrine and norepinephrine were detected in alumina extracts of Limulus midgut tissue using high performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection. Moderate levels of norepinephrine (28.2 +/- 2.1 ng/g) and dopamine (24.0 +/- 5.2 ng/g) were detected in the midgut, while epinephrine levels (7.4 +/- 0.9 ng/g) were less. Catecholamines were present in all regions along the longitudinal axis of the midgut, and norepinephrine and dopamine levels were highest in posterior regions. 2. Catecholamines decreased muscle tonus and inhibited spontaneous contractions of the Limulus midgut. Dopamine typically decreased spontaneous midgut activity at doses of 10(-8) M or greater, and produced inhibitory actions on all regions of the Limulus midgut. In some preparations epinephrine and norepinephrine elicited a secondary rhythmicity. The actions of dopamine opposed the excitatory effects produced by either proctolin or octopamine. 3. Catecholamines significantly elevated levels of cyclic AMP in Limulus midgut muscle rings. Dopamine (10(-5) M) increased cyclic AMP with a time course consistent with its physiological effects. Forskolin and several methyl xanthines increased Limulus midgut cyclic AMP levels and mimicked the inhibitory effects of dopamine on the isolated midgut preparation. Cyclic nucleotide analogues also produced dopamine-like effects on the isolated midgut preparation. Inhibition of cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase prior to addition of dopamine enhanced the effect of this amine to decrease baseline muscle tension. 4. The inhibitory effects of 10(-5) M dopamine on the midgut persisted in solutions of zero sodium and in the presence of tetrodotoxin. Zero calcium solutions gradually reduced spontaneous midgut activity and the effects of dopamine. Explanations for major biodiversity patterns have not achieved a consensus, even for the latitudinal diversity gradient (LDG), but most relate to patterns of solar energy influx into Earth systems, and its effects on temperature (as biochemical activity rates are temperature sensitive) and photosynthesis (which drives nearly all of the productivity that fuels ecosystems). Marine systems break some of the confounding correlations among temperature, latitude and biodiversity that typify the terrestrial systems that have dominated theoretical discussions and large‐scale analyses. High marine diversities occur not only in warm shallow seas where productivity may be either low or high, depending on regional features, but also in very cold deep‐sea regions, indicating that diversity is promoted by stability in temperature and in trophic resources (nutrients and food items), and more specifically by their interaction, rather than by high mean values of either variable. The common association of high diversity with stable but low to moderate annual productivity suggests that ecological specialization underlies the similarly high diversities in the shallow tropics and deep sea. Recent work on shallow‐marine bivalves is consistent with this view of decreasing specialization in less stable habitats. Lower diversities in shallow seas are associated with either high thermal seasonality (chiefly in temperate latitudes) or highly seasonal trophic supplies (at any latitude), which exclude species that are adapted to narrow ranges of those variables.  相似文献
